The Battle of Buxar: A Turning Point in Indian History

The Battle of Buxar, fought on October 22, 1764, was a decisive conflict that established the British East India Company as the dominant military and political power in India. The battle was fought at the site of the modern Buxar Fort in the Buxar district, between the forces of the British East India Company, led by Hector Munro, and the combined armies of Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal; Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh; and the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. The district is also the birthplace of musician Ustad Bismillah Khan.,Unlike the Battle of Plassey, which was won largely through deceit, the Battle of Buxar was a full-fledged military engagement won on the strength of superior British firepower and tactics. The victory was comprehensive and its consequences were far-reaching.,The subsequent Treaty of Allahabad in 1765 granted the East India Company the Diwani, or the right to collect revenue, from the provinces of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. This effectively marked the beginning of formal British rule in India, transforming a trading company into a sovereign power. The battlefield at Buxar thus stands as a silent witness to a moment that changed the course of Indian history forever, a history also shaped by local heroes like Veer Kunwar Singh.
