Singheshwar Mela: A Grand Fair for Mahashivratri
The Singheshwar Mela, held at the ancient Singheshwar Sthan temple in Madhepura, is one of the most important fairs in North Bihar. The fair commences on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri and continues for about a month, drawing huge crowds from Bihar and neighboring Nepal.,The primary purpose of the fair is religious. Devotees throng the temple to offer prayers and holy water to the Shivalinga, which is believed to be self-manifested (swayambhu). The fair is a vibrant spectacle of faith, with devotional songs and chants filling the air.,Alongside the religious activities, the Singheshwar Mela is also a major commercial event. It features a large cattle market, where various breeds of cows, buffaloes, and bullocks are traded. Numerous stalls sell agricultural implements, household goods, handicrafts, and local delicacies. The fair is a vital part of the region's socio-economic and cultural life, much like the Khagra Mela and the Sonepur Mela.
