The Musical Instruments of Bihari Folk Music
The soul of Bihar's Folk Music lies not just in its lyrics but also in the rustic and vibrant sounds of its traditional instruments. These instruments, often simple in construction, create the powerful rhythms and melodies that accompany every celebration and ritual.,The Dholak, a two-headed hand drum, is perhaps the most ubiquitous instrument, providing the basic beat for almost all folk genres. The Bansuri (bamboo flute) adds a sweet, melodious layer, often evoking feelings of love and longing. The Harmonium, though a European import, has been seamlessly integrated into the folk tradition, providing harmonic support.,Other important instruments include the Tasa and Jhanjh (cymbals), which create a loud, festive sound during processions and celebrations like Holi. The single-stringed Ektara is often used by wandering minstrels singing devotional 'Nirgun' songs. Together, these instruments form the rich and diverse orchestra of Bihari folk music, accompanying dances like Launda Naach.
