Launda Naach: A Fading Folk Dance Tradition
Launda Naach is a vibrant and energetic folk dance tradition from the Bhojpuri-speaking regions of Bihar. In this art form, male performers dress as women and dance to the tunes of folk music, often as part of a larger theatrical performance. The tradition was particularly prominent in the folk theatre of Bhikhari Thakur, where the 'launda' would play the female roles.,These performers are highly skilled dancers and actors, capable of expressing a wide range of emotions through their movements and expressions. The dance was a major source of entertainment in rural areas, especially during weddings and other celebrations.,However, with the advent of modern forms of entertainment and changing social norms, Launda Naach has seen a sharp decline. The art form is often stigmatized, and the artists face financial hardship and social ridicule. Despite these challenges, a few dedicated performers are striving to keep this unique and historically significant cultural tradition alive.
