The Majestic Tomb of Sher Shah Suri in Sasaram
The Tomb of Sher Shah Suri in Sasaram, Rohtas, is an architectural masterpiece that stands as a testament to the vision of the great emperor, Sher Shah Suri. Built between 1540 and 1545, this grand mausoleum is situated in the middle of a large artificial lake, connected to the mainland by a causeway. For more on the emperor, see The Legacy of Sher Shah Suri.,The tomb is a fine example of the Indo-Islamic architectural style, blending Pathan and Mughal elements. It is a three-storied octagonal structure made of red sandstone, crowned by a massive dome that is 22 feet wider than that of the Taj Mahal. The corners are adorned with smaller domes, and the entire structure is surrounded by a large veranda with 24 smaller domes, creating a harmonious and imposing silhouette.,The setting of the tomb in the middle of a lake is particularly striking. The reflection of the mausoleum in the water creates a breathtaking effect, especially during sunrise and sunset. This design choice not only enhances its beauty but also served a defensive purpose. Often considered a precursor to the grand Mughal tombs like Humayun's Tomb and the Taj Mahal, the tomb of Sher Shah Suri is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history and architecture.
