Sama Chakeva: Celebrating the Brother-Sister Bond
Sama Chakeva is a heartwarming festival celebrated in the Mithila region of Bihar, primarily by women to honor the bond between brothers and sisters. The festival begins with the arrival of migratory birds in winter, symbolizing the return of the birds Sama and Chakeva. It is a key part of the culture of Mithila, much like Madhubani Painting and the tradition of The Paag. The region is also known for the poet Vidyapati.,Women and young girls create colorful clay idols of the bird pair and other characters from the folk tale associated with the festival. For several nights, they gather in groups, sing traditional songs, perform rituals, and wish for the well-being and long life of their brothers.,The festival culminates with the 'vidaai' (farewell) of Sama, where the clay idols are immersed in a river or pond, with the promise that she will return again next year. Sama Chakeva is a beautiful expression of sibling love, similar to the sentiment of Raksha Bandhan, and the region's close connection with nature.
