The Legacy of Ahimsa: Bihar's Gift to the World
The principle of Ahimsa, or non-violence towards all living beings, is one of India's greatest philosophical contributions to the world, and its roots run deep in the soil of Bihar. This ancient land was the 'karmabhoomi' (land of action) for both @[person:gautama-buddha] and @[person:lord-mahavira], the two great apostles of non-violence.,Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in @[place:bodh-gaya] and delivered many of his key sermons in places like @[place:rajgir] and @[place:vaishali]. His teachings emphasized compassion and the cessation of suffering through the Middle Path. Similarly, Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, was born in Vaishali and attained nirvana in @[place:pawapuri-jal-mandir]. He preached an even more stringent form of Ahimsa, making it the central tenet of Jainism.,This legacy of non-violence continued to resonate through the centuries. Emperor @[person:ashoka-the-great], after the bloody Kalinga war, embraced Buddhism and made Ahimsa a state policy. In the 20th century, Mahatma Gandhi chose Champaran in Bihar to launch his first Satyagraha, a movement based entirely on the principles of non-violent resistance. Thus, Bihar remains a powerful symbol of the enduring relevance of Ahimsa.
