Birsa Munda led a tribal religious millenarian movement that arose in the Bengal Presidency (now Jharkhand) in the late 19th century. He is revered as 'Dharti Aaba' (Father of the Earth). His rebellion against British colonial rule and the conversion activities of missionaries made him an icon of tribal rights and resistance. His birthday is celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in India.
